A Discord profile picture from your own photo

A Discord PFP is seen tiny: a circle next to every message, in the member list, in voice channels. At that size a cluttered selfie turns into a smudge, and a clean cutout on a strong colour, or on nothing at all, reads instantly. Making one takes a photo, a background remover and a square. This guide covers what Discord’s own help pages say about avatars in September 2026 (and what they leave out, including pixel size and transparency), how to make a square that survives the circle crop, whether a transparent PFP is a good idea, animated avatars, and a different picture per server.

What Discord says about profile pictures

From Discord Support, Custom Profiles and Per-Server Profiles, checked September 2026:

What the pages do not say. There is no pixel size for avatars, no maximum file size for the main profile avatar, and nothing about transparency. Sizes you find elsewhere (128 x 128, 512 x 512) come from third-party sites, not from Discord. Treat any number as advice, not a rule.

A square PNG of 512 x 512 pixels or larger is a sensible master. It is sharp on high-density screens, far below any file size limit, and Discord scales it down for the small circles.

How to change your Discord avatar

On desktop or in the browser:

1. Click the cogwheel at the bottom left to open User Settings.
2. Open the Profiles tab.
3. Press Change Avatar, or your current avatar, and upload your image.
4. Adjust the crop so the circle frames your face.
5. Select Apply, then Save Changes.

On mobile: tap your avatar in the bottom right of the app, tap Edit Profile, and change your avatar there.

To go back to an earlier picture, press Change Avatar and choose one from Recent Avatars.

Make a Discord PFP from a photo

1. Choose the photo

Pick a photo with a clear outline and some room around the subject: head and shoulders with space above the hair, or your drawing or character with space around it. A circle inside a square loses the corners, so a subject that fills the photo edge to edge has nothing to spare.

iPhone photos in HEIC format can go straight in; getPNG reads JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and HEIC.

2. Remove the background

Drop the photo on getPNG, choose it, or paste it from the clipboard. The model finds the subject, and the edge is then fitted to the full-size photo, so hair keeps its soft, fine outline instead of a blurry, enlarged mask.

3. Check the edge in both Discord themes

Discord has light and dark themes, and a cutout that looks clean on one can show a rim on the other. Switch the preview between white and black. A pale fringe glows on black; a dark fringe looks like a pencil line on white.

• Clean edge colour takes the colour of the old background out of the soft edge pixels, which is the usual cause of a green or blue rim.
• Edge shift pulls the outline in by a pixel or two.
• Feather softens an edge that looks cut with scissors.

All three are instant and do not run the model again. Drag the divider in the compare view across the hair to see whether anything was lost. White halos around a cutout explains fringes in more depth.

4. Pick transparent or a colour

A bold solid colour is the reliable choice. It looks identical in every theme, in notifications and on every device. Teal, orange, violet or yellow stand out in a member list full of photos. Pick one that contrasts with your hair and clothes.

Transparent lets the Discord theme show through, which can look striking. But Discord does not document what it does with transparency, so test it (below) before you rely on it.

5. Put it on a square with margin

In getPNG’s Sizes panel, choose the Profile picture canvas, a 512 x 512 square. The preview is the file:

• Choose fit to place the whole subject inside a margin you set, which is what a circle crop needs.
• Drag the subject so the eyes sit a little above the middle, with space above the head.
• Keep it transparent or on the colour you picked.

The subject is never enlarged past its own pixels, so a small cutout is placed at its own size rather than blown up into a blur. Start from the original photo, not a screenshot of it.

6. Save as PNG and upload

Save a PNG, then upload it with Change Avatar. Use Discord’s crop step for any last adjustment.

Does Discord keep transparent PFPs?

Discord’s help pages do not say. Platforms change how they process uploads without announcing it, so a claim from a forum post from two years ago is not worth much. Test it on your own account.

Even when transparency survives, a transparent cutout has one quirk: the circle is drawn by Discord, but your cutout is not a circle. Shoulders that reach the edge of the square are sliced by the circle into a hard line. The margin from step 5 avoids it. Animated avatars and server profiles

Animated avatars need Nitro. Discord’s Custom Profiles page says Nitro subscribers can upload animated GIFs as their profile avatar. getPNG makes still pictures, saved as PNG, WebP or JPG. So for an animated avatar, make the animation in an animation tool; a clean still cutout is still useful as its first frame or as the fallback for non-Nitro accounts.

Server avatars need Nitro too. With per-server profiles you can use a different avatar, banner and About Me in each server, for example a character avatar in a roleplay server and a photo in a work community. Right-click your avatar in a text channel and choose Edit Per-server Profile. Server avatars can be JPG, PNG or GIF up to 8 MB. Your main avatar still shows in any server where you have not set one.

Avatar decorations are the frames and effects bought from the Discord Shop. They frame your avatar, so a busy decoration and a busy background compete: another reason to keep the PFP itself simple.

Designing for a tiny circle

Most people see your PFP at the size of a fingertip. At that size only shape and colour survive.

• Face large. Head and a little shoulder, not a full figure.
• One flat background colour. A gradient or scene turns to mush.
• High contrast. Dark hair on yellow or teal; light hair on navy, violet or dark green.
• No text. It is unreadable at avatar size.
• Stay recognisable. The same colour across servers and platforms becomes part of how people spot you.

When this does not work

• Discord rejects the file. Check the format: PNG or GIF for your profile avatar, JPG, PNG or GIF for a server avatar. A WebP, HEIC or AVIF file needs saving as PNG first. Server avatars must be under 8 MB.
• Your GIF is not animated. Animated avatars need Nitro.
• The circle cuts off hair or ears. There is not enough margin. Go back to the profile picture canvas, use fit with a larger margin, and move the face slightly down.
• The PFP looks blurry. The source was too small, for example a crop from a group photo. The subject is never enlarged past its own pixels, so start from the original, full-size file.
• A coloured rim shows in dark mode. Use Clean edge colour and a pixel of Edge shift, or put the cutout on a solid colour close in brightness to the old background.
• Something extra stayed in the cutout. A headset cable, a chair back or a hand on your shoulder may be kept. getPNG has no brush to erase parts by hand; fix it in an editor such as Photopea or GIMP, or choose another photo.
• Transparency turned into a square. Discord or an app in between flattened it. Use a solid colour.

Privacy: the photo behind the PFP

Your PFP is public; the photo you cut it from often is not. It may show other people, your room, or carry location data in its metadata. Many online PFP makers upload the whole photo to their servers. getPNG removes the background inside your browser, the photo is never sent anywhere, and after the first picture it works with the connection switched off.

The steps, in short

1. Pick a photo with room around the subject. Head and shoulders, or your character, with space above and to the sides so the circle crop has something to take away.
2. Remove the background. Drop the photo on getPNG. The cutout is made in the browser at the full resolution of the original.
3. Choose transparent or a bold colour. A solid colour looks the same in every Discord theme. Transparent lets the theme show through; check it in light and dark before relying on it.
4. Place it on a square. In Sizes, choose the profile picture canvas, fit the subject inside a margin and drag it so the face sits a little above centre.
5. Save as PNG. PNG keeps a transparent background and crisp edges, and Discord lists it for profile avatars.
6. Upload in Discord. Open User Settings with the cogwheel, go to Profiles, press Change Avatar, choose the file, adjust the crop, then Apply and Save Changes.

Questions

What size should a Discord profile picture be?

Discord's help pages do not state pixel dimensions for avatars. Use a square image, 512 x 512 pixels or larger, so it stays sharp on high-density screens. For per-server avatars Discord gives a maximum file size of 8 MB (checked September 2026).

What file types can I use for a Discord PFP?

Discord's Custom Profiles page lists PNG and GIF for profile avatars, with GIF for Nitro subscribers. Its Per-Server Profiles page lists JPG, PNG and GIF for server avatars. PNG is the safe choice for a still picture, and the only one of those that keeps smooth transparency.
