When a HEIC photo needs to be a JPG

iPhones save photos as HEIC, a format that keeps the same picture in about half the space of a JPG. Inside Apple's apps that is invisible. Outside them it is a daily annoyance: a job application portal refuses the photo, a school form wants a JPG, Windows Photos shows a blank tile, an online shop's listing tool will not take it, a relative's Android phone cannot open the attachment. How to convert HEIC to JPG

1. Drop the HEIC photos on this page, or choose them. Twenty or two hundred, it makes no difference.
2. Wait for the first one. The first time, your browser fetches the HEIC decoder (about 2 MB) and keeps it; after that each photo takes a second or two.
3. Adjust the quality if you like. The default of 92 looks the same as the original to the eye. Lower it for smaller files, then click Apply quality to the list.
4. Save. Click Save JPG next to a photo, or Save all to get every JPG in one ZIP file, which is easier than two hundred separate downloads.

Your photos stay on your phone or computer

Browsers other than Safari cannot open HEIC themselves, so nearly every HEIC to JPG converter online uploads your photos to a server, converts them there and sends the JPGs back. Those are photos of your children, your home, your friends and your ID documents, and many of them record where they were taken to within a few metres. What changes, and what does not

• Full size. A 12 megapixel photo stays 12 megapixels; nothing is resized.
• Location, date and camera details are removed. The metadata in the HEIC is not copied into the JPG, which makes the photo safe to post publicly without showing where it was taken.
• Only the still photo. The moving part of a Live Photo, and extra frames of a burst, are not in the JPG.
• The right way up, because the rotation stored in the HEIC is applied as it is decoded.
• Standard colour. The photo is converted to sRGB, the colour every screen and printer expects; an HDR photo looks like its ordinary version.
• A little compression. JPG is compressed again, so a JPG is not a bit-for-bit copy. At quality 92 or above you will not see it; whether the JPG is larger or smaller than the HEIC depends on the photo and the quality you choose.

JPG or PNG?

JPG is the right choice for sharing, uploading and printing photos: small files that everything accepts. Choose PNG when you want an exact copy to edit further, cut out or keep as a master, and accept a file several times larger. Make new photos JPG from the start

If you convert often, change it on the iPhone: Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG; the ones already taken stay HEIC, and this page takes care of those. The iPhone's own setting for copying to a computer with a cable, Transfer to Mac or PC under Settings > Apps > Photos (Settings > Photos on iOS 17 and earlier), converts as it copies when set to Automatic.
