Why you end up with WebP files
WebP is the format most websites now serve images in, because it is smaller than JPG and PNG for the same picture. Right-click and save a photo from a shop, a news site or Google Images, and there is a good chance the file ends in .webp even when the page looked like it showed a JPG. Browsers open it without a second thought. Plenty of other software does not: older versions of Photoshop and Word, many print and upload forms, some email clients, marketplace listing tools and a long tail of desktop apps still expect JPG or PNG. How to convert WebP to PNG

- Save. Click Save PNG next to a file, or Save all to get them together in one ZIP. Each PNG keeps the file name of the original with a new extension.
What changes, and what does not
The pixels do not change. PNG is lossless, so the PNG holds exactly the picture the WebP decoded to, at the same width and height. If the WebP was saved with lossy compression, the PNG cannot restore detail that was already thrown away, but it adds no loss of its own. Transparency is kept. A WebP with a transparent background, a logo or a product cutout, becomes a PNG with the same soft transparent edges.
The file usually gets bigger. That is expected: WebP was designed to be small, and PNG was designed to be exact. A photo can easily be three to five times larger as a PNG. If size matters more than compatibility, keep the WebP, or save a JPG instead with PNG to JPG. Reducing PNG file size covers the tools that shrink a PNG without visible loss.
Metadata is left behind. Camera details, dates and any location data stored in the WebP are not copied into the PNG. Animation is not kept: an animated WebP becomes a still PNG of its first frame.

How do I convert WebP to PNG for free?

Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the WebP is kept exactly. If the WebP was saved lossy, the PNG cannot add back detail that compression already removed, but it adds no new loss of its own.
Is transparency kept when converting WebP to PNG?

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, because PNG holds a single image. The converted file is a still picture of that frame.
